Research Focus:

The Okavango Delta in northern Botswana is one of the world’s largest inland alluvial fans and is renowned for its megafauna, including the vulnerable hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius). My project will focus on the distribution, density, and ecology of hippopotamus in the Okavango Delta. In addition, I will research hippopotamus as ecosystem engineers and in particular, aim to quantify the impacts of their movements on the geomorphology and hydrology of the delta. Research on the hippopotamus populations of Botswana is scarce, particularly when compared to populations in other countries. Previous researchers have described the impacts of hippopotamus on the geomorphology and hydrology of the delta, but these are yet to be quantified. Understanding the scope and specifics of their role as ecosystem engineers will shed light on the potential consequences of further declines in hippopotamus numbers on the delta.
